How to install LUTs into your video editing software

Every video editing software has their own unique way on how to install LUTs. A simple Google or Youtube search will answer this question 'How to install LUTs into 'name of software'

Will these LUTs work on iPhone?

Yes they will. As long as the app allows for .cube files to be imported, they can be used. VN is the most popular app the enables the use of imported LUTs. I often colour grade my iPhone footage using VN. All you have to do is transfer your LUTs files into the files app on your phone. From there, you can install it on VN.

Will these LUTs work on any camera?

Yes. These LUTs will work with all major camera models, including Canon, Sony, DJI, Blackmagic, RED and Arri cameras.

How to use these LUTs with your own footage?

Once you have installed the LUTs into your video editing software, you are ready to apply them to any footage. For LOG footage, the 'Explore LOG LUTs' will work best, and for footage that has already be corrected, the 'Explore Rec709 LUTS' will work best

In order to achieve the best results, I highly recommend you shoot your footage in the flat picture profile, (LOG footage) format. This will get the most out of your camera's dynamic range by capturing all the highlights, shadows and whites with the highest precision.

From here, my best advice is to download your camera manufacturer's Rec709 conversion LUT (this is accessible as a free download directly from their website). Install it to your video editing software and apply it directly to your LOG footage. From here, apply one of 'Explore Rec709 LUTS'.

How to achieve the best results when applying these LUTs?

While these LUTs have been designed to work with any footage, with the primary purpose of speeding up your colour grading workflow, it should be noted, similar to photo presets, they are not expected to be a 100% 'click and fix' straight away when applied. Colour correction and other minor adjustments will very likely need to occur in conjunction with the LUTs.

Before applying the LUT to the footage, it is highly recommended you adjust the white balance first. This is especially the case if you noticed your footage is too cool or warm. Adjusting your white balance first will achieve the best results for when the LUT is applied.

When first applying the LUT to your footage, if you find the intensity is too high, simply lower the intensity (reduce the opacity of the LUT). For me personally, even for my own footage, I find that applying each of my LUTs at about 60-90% intensity, then minor colour correction adjustments, such as contrast, highlights and shadows, work best for me.
